Course description for Introduction to Infection Control:
This course will prepare the student for the realistic challenges in dealing with biological hazards such as blood and other bodily fluids (trauma scene), sewage and other Category 3 water scenarios, virus outbreaks like the recent Coronavirus SARS-2 (COVID-19) and fungi (mould). Topics that will be covered will include:
- Legal duties including COSHH Regulations and PPE
- Containment principles
- Ventilation
- Filtration
- Cleaning procedures
- Antimicrobials
- Fogging
- Managing biological waste
- Discussion on what may qualify someone to be deemed “competent” at carrying out this kind of work
- Insurance
- Counselling
Those engaging in biological hazard cleanup work MUST learn how to ensure that their cleaning procedures do not spread contaminants and to protect themselves and others from infection.
